Entlebucher Mountain Dog frequently asked questions.

These are questions that often arise from perspective new Entle owners.

Q. Male or Female?
A.
Selecting a male or female is a personal choice but questions often arise about the difference is characteristics As a rule of thumb there can be more difference between two of the same sex as there is between a male and a female. A lot of folks have bad experiences with males because they knew a male dog that was not neutered. Between 6 months and a year males will start developing stud characteristics such as lifting their leg to mark territory. This is very common especially if the scent of a female is around. Once they start it is hard to break even if they are neutered. A neutered male are very loyal. My experience is that they are also slightly more muscular and athletic. Females are more nurturing. But over all unless they are side by side to compare its hard to tell the difference.

Q. Are Entlbuchers hyperactive?
A.
Entles are a working class dog. They require lots of exercise for physical and mental health. If you keep a entle pinned up they will drive you crazy, but only because you drove them nuts first. Daily walks or runs, 20 minutes on a tread mill, playing with other dogs all will make the entle experience a pleasant one. The characteristics of the parents are also important. Some entles are more active then others. If you are a very active person, search for a set of active parents and the offspring will more than likely reflect that trait. More passive parents yield calmer dogs.

Q. Are Entlebucher destructive?
A.
My experience is that Entles are not normally destructive. They occasionally dig holes in the dirt, not to get somewhere or escape an enclosure, just to dig. Leave a bag of trash around, you'll be picking up the pieces for sure. Can't blame them. Keep the trash in closed cans. Don't want them getting into chicken bones, etc.

Q. Are Entles social?
A.
Here again that depends on the breeding. Most entles are "standoffish" around strangers. They are not prone to be aggressive. A friend comes over, they will not run up and lick them to death. They are more prone to sit behind a chair and watch what's going on. They are the same with people that they are with dogs. They are more of your pack then they are a dog looking for fellow pack members. They often look to their owners to see how you react to a situation before deciding their coarse of action.

Q. Do they travel well?
A.
They love to go places. But don't expect the dog to be hanging its head out the window catching bugs. They are perfectly content in the passengers seat pointed to you or with a head in your lap. That's what they do. Pay attention to their owners. Above all they are focused.
