Swiss Mountain Dogs

Entlebucher Mountain Dog, is the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs including the Appenzeller, the Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. The Swiss Mountain dogs are descended from Molossus type dogs brought by the Romans as they passed through Helvetia over two thousand years ago. The smaller of the Swiss Mountain dogs, the Entlebucher and Appenzeller were used as cattle herding dogs, bringing the dairy cows in from mountain pastures. The larger breeds were used as flock guardians and cart-pullers to transport milk and cheese to market.

All four breeds are marked the same and all but the Bernese have medium coats. The Bernese and the Greater Swiss are about the same size (120-140 lbs) but the Bernese has longer hair. The coat of a typical Swiss Mountain Dog is shinny and smooth. It is often said that dirt does not stick to them. My dogs can get in a mud puddle and 30 minutes later look like they had a bath. This is all good news since they apparently love water like a Black Lab but just absolutely hate the bath tub. We have numerous creeks and streams on out mountain top location and all are favorite stopping points on hikes or runs.

We came across Entlebuchers years ago after falling in love with a friends Greater Swiss. The size of the dog was daunting and with a short life expectancy due to the size of the dog, it did not seem right for our family. When we shortly afterwards discovered the miniature version, known as the Entlebucher our search was over.

Entlebuchers are often referred to as Entles, Bernese as Burners, and the Greater Swiss as Swissys, all make great pets depending on your lifestyle and room at home.
